Chinese digital entertainment pioneer Snail Games adopts IKinema middleware to animate VR and game titles
“To reach China’s animation shores is excellent news for us and we’re delighted that Snail Games is the first triple-A gaming studio in China to take our animation technology to their consumers. Mobile, PC and now VR games are hugely popular in China, and we’re excited to work together with Snail Games’ development team to help further deliver exceptional believability and realism to their games.”
Alexandre Pechev | CEO | IKinema
“We welcome this partnership. IKinema RunTime middleware has exceeded our expectations – not only are we able to produce characters which accurately reflect human behavior but also, our animation processes have been greatly simplified, which means developers can focus more time on other areas.”
Tianqi Wu | Vice President | Snail Games
RunTime lets studios procedurally animate characters of any shape or size during game-play, resulting in creatures that respond to the game world around them with more life-like and natural movement. The technology also allows developers to use the same code for mobile and triple-A projects, meaning they can apply universal animation standards to multi-platform titles with minimum effort and expense.
IKinema recently extended this integration to enable the easy creation of game rigs and behaviours for VR games and experiences. As a result, VR and game developers alike are able to deliver astonishingly real animation with totally believable characters.
The additional tools include a dedicated VR rig editor in which the VR controllers and head mounted display can be associated with any character. With this, developers can create a VR rig and start animating the full body in less than 10 minutes.
Another feature is a dedicated VR solving node that combines upper body animation via the controllers, with foot placement for the ultimate immersive experience. These capabilities are available with both RunTime and RunTime-Indie.
RunTime for VR is available for download on IKinema’s website, www.IKinema.com. It is available on the Windows, PS4 and other VR compatible platforms.
