Tarsier Studios and BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe team up with IKinema to animate gamescom hit, Little Nightmares
FARNHAM, UK, 11 October 2016 – IKINEMA, the leader in real-time inverse kinematics, announced today that Tarsier Studios, of Sweden, has secured a licensing agreement to utilise IKinema’s award winning full-body IK solving middleware, RunTime in the development of their game title, Little Nightmares débuted by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe at gamescom 2016.
Tarsier Studios recently signed a worldwide publishing agreement with publisher, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe in August to produce their first in-house game for PlayStation® 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC platforms, due for Spring 2017 release.
Little Nightmares is an atmospheric tale of child-hero, Six who must surreptitiously navigate her way through the vast and mysterious ship-like vessel – The Maw. Outwitting the clutches of quirkily disturbing monsters is her only route to freedom, a uniquely styled game that jostles with players’ childhood nightmares.
"We’ve loved this game since its beginnings – Tarsier Studios has succeeded in creating an unconventional game-style that was so well received at gamescom 2016. We’re incredibly proud that RunTime is helping to achieve the level of realism that’s required.”
Alexandre Pechev | CEO | IKinema
"For a small and ambitious studio like Tarsier, finding the right middleware to leverage our creative talent is of crucial importance. In working with IKinema we’ve unlocked an outstanding tool to help us realise our vision for a tactile, atmospheric game like Little Nightmares.”
Ola Holmdahl | CEO | Tarsier Studios
Character animation interacts with dynamic objects with more believable motion and wider range of behaviours using RunTime
"IKinema’s full body IK solution allowed us to quickly and easily add far more life to the characters in Little Nightmares. Six can interact with a wide variety of dynamic objects in a way that is tactile, believable and far more detailed, giving a level of physicality that perfectly captures the feel of our game. IKinema also allowed us to focus on wider variety of behaviours for our AI characters instead of spending time with fixed animations.”
Andreas Johnsson | Business Developer and Co-founder | Tarsier Studios
IKinema RunTime for VR and games
RunTime lets studios procedurally animate characters and multi-limbed creatures of differing proportions during gameplay. It significantly reduces animation assets whilst maintaining astonishingly believable body response to slash production time and cost. Eliminate 'invisible man syndrome’ with full-body visibility in VR. Interact with obstacles and perform tasks with incredible accuracy, all within the game-world. The technology also allows developers to use the same code to achieve the same quality animation with minimum effort and expense across multi-player, VR, consoles, PC, and mobile games. IKinema RunTime is integrated with Unreal Engine, and now available for Unreal 4.13.
IKinema RunTime includes the RunTime VR extension, available for download from the IKinema website, www.IKinema.com. Alternatively email store@IKinema.com to request an evaluation pack.
IKinema (www.IKinema.com) sells products that dramatically improve the quality of animation and reduce the cost of producing animation. It uses patented IP to dynamically calculate animation sequences. The resulting animations are more realistic and cheaper to produce and maintain. IKinema was established in 2006 in the UK and has actively traded since 2009. The company owns patent protected intellectual property for fast, realistic and organic animation for games, virtual, and movie production. Prominent clients include: Capcom, Disney, DreamWorks Animation, Epic Games, Framestore, LucasArts, Microsoft, NCSOFT, Nvidia, PlatinumGames Inc., Snail Games, Square Enix, Sumo Digital, Supermassive Games, Technicolor, The Foundry, 20th Century Fox, and Vicon.
